Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep123: Spoiler Alert!!!

The Force will awaken one month from today, and the KtS Podcast is deep in preparation with the fifth installment of our Star Wars retrospective! This week, Ian, Bill, Gari, and Charlie discuss Irvin Kershner's 1980 classic, The Empire Strikes Back! As with previous episodes in the series, the gang re-discovers some long-forgotten gems and raises their eyebrows at a few not-so-flattering moments in this mostly perfect film.

Also, Ian takes a moment (or two, or three) to rave about Cool Apocalypse, the debut feature film from Michael Glover Smith. This Chicago-set relationship drama is superbly acted, insightfully written, and shot in an intimate style that places the audience in the fifth chair at a dark and wacky going-away dinner. If you'd like to be in an actual audience for Cool Apocalypse, join Smith and select cast and crew this weekend at the Gene Siskel Film Center. You'll be glad you did.

In the meantime, kick back with a tall glass of blue milk and fantasize about your favorite scruffy-looking nerf herder as Episode 123 transports you to a galaxy far, far away....

As always, we invite you to comment, follow, like, subscribe to, and share Kicking the Seat on TwitterFacebookiTunes, and Stitcher!
