Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep158: A NATION Divided

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast looks at Nate Parker's controversial new film, The Birth of a Nation. Emmanuel Noisette of Eman's Movie Reviews returns to the show to discuss the would-be Awards Season darling; its relevance in the American race-relations landscape; and whether Parker and co-writer Jean Celestin's involvement with a 1999 Penn State rape has fairly or unfairly overshadowed the film's release.

Also, Ian speaks a bit about truth, perception, and guilt in the current political and artistic climate, and points listeners to a variety of media sources covering similar issues:

  • Anderson Cooper's 10/2 60 Minutes profile of and interview with Nate Parker

  • Erik Childress' Movie Madness Podcast #24, featuring a very different kind of Birth of a Nation discussion

  • Eman's review of the film and a separate piece on how different audiences reacted at the two screenings he attended

  • The Kicking the Seat written review

Episode 158 is by no means meant to be the definitive podcast about The Birth of a Nation. Rather, it is a component of a wide and varied conversational tapestry, born out of two very real and very relevant tragedies.
