Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep189: Fathomable

Last night, Ian and David Fowlie attended a once-in-a-lifetime performance of Woody Harrelson's directorial debut, Lost in London, courtesy of Fathom Events. The single-take film was shot in real-time and streamed live to theatres in the UK and the US, and recounts the (mostly?) true story of the actor's 2002 misadventures in The Old Smoke. We stuck around for a live Q&A afterwards, and then hoofed it to the Golden Nugget for a brief chat about lighting SNAFUs, the art of vamping, and the future of live cinema.

We do get into spoilers here, so enter at your own risk. Then again, is it possible to spoil a movie that will ostensibly only play once?

No, that's not London calling--it's Episode 189!
