Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep221: Planet with a Manly Face

The Movie Summer of 2017 has ended before it's begun--so say Ian and Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie, who blast off into the rip-roaring, gut-busting, heart-tugging adventure of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! Yes, James Gunn's sequel is so much more than glossy blockbuster product; it's a bona fide, beautiful fantasy picture that digs deep into big ideas.

Have Gunn and company done more than just get better at hiding their influences this time out? Can Ian edit this episode before his second son arrives? And what makes Kurt Russell so freaking awesome? Listen and find out!

No matter how you slice it, Episode 221 has more daddy issues than Parents Magazine's back catalogue!
