Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep281: Guillermo Del Snyder

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast welcomes back Emmanuel Noisette of EMan's Movie Reviews for a deep dive into Guillermo Del Toro's The Shape of Water! The weird and whimsical Cold War fantasy wasn't Ian's kettle of fish, and he was reluctant to float his opinions on the show. Fortunately, Eman's take aligned almost beat for beat--making this a not-so-laudatory conversation that you won't find anywhere else!

How does The Shape of Water stack up to Del Toro's other dark fairy tales, like Pan's Labyrinth and Crimson Peak? Are the writer/director's signature geek sensibilities becoming cliche? And just how many parallels between Guillermo Del Toro and Zack Snyder can be mused upon in one podcast?

The answer to these questions--plus a ton more that you'd never think to ask--await in this bouyantly blasphemous installment!

Episode 281 is certifiably mer-mad!
