Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep280: Sign Language

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Keeping it Reel's David Fowlie venture to a cabin in the woods (okay, a condo on Chicago's North Side) for an in-depth look at writer/director Michael Glover Smith's Mercury in Retrograde! Smith and star Najarra Townsend talk the guys through the genesis, production, and thematic intricacies of this drama about three couples working through their issues while ostensibly getting away from it all.

From the horror-inspired elements that inform Smith's too-real depictions of modern relationships; to Townsend's taking creative ownership of her character for a crucial scene; to the ups and downs of micro-budget filmmaking, this episode will inspire, entertain, and put Mercury in Retrograde at the top of your "To Look Out For" list as the 2018 festival season ramps up.

Episode 280 just knew you were a Virgo!
