Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep315: Premium Cable

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and David Fowlie of Keeping it Reel pull off what may be a podcasting first: recording a movie-review show from the set of an entirely different movie! Yes, the guys pulled up a booth in Hackney's bar last week to talk about the bawdy blockbuster sensation, Deadpool 2--just as the cast and crew of Michael Glover Smith's latest film, Rendezvous in Chicago, was setting up for a long night of shooting!

This jam-packed installment begins with a special message, continues with a spoiler-ific (we're talking right out of the gate) analysis of why Deadpool succeeds where the original fell short; and concludes with a sneak preview of several interviews Ian and David conducted with Rendezvous in Chicago writer/director Smith and stars Clare Cooney* and Kevin Wehby!

Also, Ian gives a heads-up regarding next month's sci-fi/horror genre festival, Cinepocalypse, which returns to Chicago's Music Box Theatre for another year of big-screen chills, spills, and kills!

For the love of God, don't bring your children to Episode 315!

*Read David's interview with Clare about her spectacular short film, Runner, which shared the Audience Award at this year's Chicago Critics Film Festival!
