Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep316: Soycott THIS!

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and David Fowlie of Keeping it Reel head to the Wild West of deep space with a look at Solo: A Star Wars Story! Ron Howard's film has been plagued by bad press from the get-go. Between the hiring and firing of the original directing team; rumors of an on-set acting coach for star Alden Ehrenreich; and an increasing backlash from Internet fandom regarding Disney's handling of the Star Wars franchise, the odd are definitely stacked against this prequel adventure.

As you'll soon hear, Ian and David (who brought a good degree of skepticism into the screening they attended two weeks ago), were quickly won over by the film--despite their checks from Disney having not yet cleared [WINKY FACE EMOJI]. Before the chat, Ian talks about the controversies surrounding the film, including the alleged "Soycott" designed to hurt Solo's box office and jeopardize Lusasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy's job.

Whether or not Solo conquers or conks out, the dueling narratives surrounding the film are about as satisfying as any epic clashes you'll see at the movies this summer.

Episode 316 rhymes. It's like poetry!
